We drank a 53 years old Barbaresco wine
Produttori del Barbaresco is arguably the best wine cooperative in the world.
Created in 1894, Domizio Cavazza, headmaster of the Royal Enological School of Alba and a Barbaresco resident, created the first cooperative, the «Cantine Sociali», by gathering together nine Barbaresco vineyard owners to make wine in the local castle that he owned.
He understood well the differences between the same grape, the Nebbiolo, grown in the different areas of Barolo and Barbaresco and, for the first time, recognized it on the wine label.
Still today, 130 years later, the Produttori del Barbaresco collects only the best grapes of the small local farmers around the valley and bottles a Barbaresco that for a cooperative is very very high quality.
Collector’s tip: this is a great bottle to really understand a vintage. Buy the Barbaresco classico every year to build verticals, it’s super fun.
