Viti Vecchie

Viti Vecchie

Why old-vine wines are better? During our recent tasting with Luca Roagna we discussed farming, vineyard management and terroir. If you look at his wine line-up, you’ll notice two main macro-areas: single vineyard expression and age of the vines, with the two being strictly connected. When the goal is showing the uniqueness of a single piece of land through wine, and when a big portion of the wine’s character comes from the soil, it is essential to have a very deep root system. The Langhe are composed of several layers of marine sedimentary soils, each with its own mix. And it’s all about complexity and, again, about biodiversity. It’s all connected:

The deeper the roots, the more the layers they will have to go through. The more the layers, the more diversity in nutrients. The more diversity in nutrients the more complexity in the grapes, and eventually, if you known what you are doing, in the wine.

Wanna do a fun experiment? Taste a Vecchie Viti side by side with the same vineyard and year from young vines, you’ll taste the difference!
